Huron High School Class Day Awards Program

The awards listed on this page are presented at Huron High School during the Class Day program near the end of the school year. The criteria are listed under each award: 

  • Graduating with Highest Honors
    • Preliminary qualifications determined by data after seven semesters. Principal reserves the right to include the 8th semester and alter the level of honor qualification either higher or lower to reflect final  performance.
    • (Students graduating with 3.9 -4.0 GPA)
  • High Honor Graduates
    • Preliminary qualifications determined by data after seven semesters. Principal reserves the right to include the 8th semester and alter the level of honor qualification either higher or lower to reflect final performance. 
    • (Students graduating with 3.75 - 3.8999 GPA) 
  • Honor Graduates
    • Preliminary qualifications determined by data after seven semesters. Principal reserves the right to include the 8th semester and alter the level of honor qualification either higher or lower to reflect final performance.
    • (Students graduating with 3.5 - 3.74999 GPA)
  • National Honor Society
    • Determined by application, academic eligibility, conduct record,
    • Juniors with  3.5 GPA after 5 semesters  and in "good standing"  with  HHS training  rules  may apply in spring.  
    • Seniors with 3.5 GPA after 6 semesters and in "good standing" with HHS training rules may apply in fall.
    • Reviewed and recommended  by faculty  committee, approved by principal.
    • Selection is based on Character, Service, Leadership, Scholarship 
  • Regents Scholar
    • Determined by data.
    • Four credits of math, English/lang. arts, science; three  credits of soc. studies and two credits of foreign lang.
    • 3.0 GPA after seven semesters
    • At least a "C" in all required classes
  • Senior  Academic  Letter Winner
    • Determined by data. 
    • 3.75 GPA after seven semesters
  • Career & Technical Scholar
    • Determined by data.
    • Seniors graduating with 3.5 GPA and 4 courses in any HHS Career & Technical Education approved program.
  • President's Education Awards Program
    • Determined by data.
    • Students graduating with 3.5 GPA PLUS 85% in Math or Reading score on state test.
  • Junior Academic Letter Winner
    • Determined by data.
    • 3.75 GPA after five semesters
  • Student Council Recognition
    • Monitored by student council advisor and principals
    • Elected by their peers
    • Letter Winners earned through service or performance criteria. 
  • Class Officer Recognition
    • Monitored by principal
    • Elected by their peers
  • Student School Board Member Recognition
    • Monitored by superintendent and principal
    • Elected by their peers 
    • Actively attend the school board meeting
  • Daktronic's Academic All-Star Nominee
    • There are 10 gold medal winners, 10 silver medal winners and 10 bronze medal winners throughout the state chosen from the nominees submitted.
      • Medal winners  receive a scholarship from Daktronics.
      • Schools are notified of medal winners by state committee.
    • Monitored by principal, who must be a member of SDASSP in order to nominate
    • Huron High School allowed to nominate 2-4 seniors based on class size.
    • Formula determined by South Dakota Association of Secondary Principals
      • This formula js supported by the NASSP

  • Argus Leader Academic All-Star Nominee
    • Argus determines Huron High School is allowed to nominate 1to 2 seniors.

      • Selection by principal
        • Principal elects to use SDASSP formula for Academic All-Star Award

  • NASSP Principal's Leadership Award
    • Criteria does not accompany award.
    • Determination sole responsibility and discretion of principal, who must be member of NASSP.

  • Daughters of American Revolution Good Citizen Award
    • Monitored by counselors
      • HHS Teachers choose top 3 candidates and then the seniors vote for the award winner

  • KSFY Brightest & Best/Touchstone Energy Scholar of the Week 
    • Monitored by principals and counselors
      • Eligibility (2) based on enrollment.
      • Winners based on GPA,# of AP classes, ACT/SAT scores.
      • Principal has declared students cannot also receive Daktronic's nomination, nor the awards tied to that criteria as stated in that descriptor.

  • FCA Leadership Award
    • Chosen by FCA advisors

  • U.S. Senate Youth Program
    • Monitored by counselors
      • Encourage seniors with top academics and outstanding leadership to apply.
    • Must be elected by the program.

  • Newspaper Staff Recognition
    • Monitored by Advisor
    • Must complete full year of newspaper class and participate in the production of the Tiger STRIPES
  • Yearbook Staff Recognition
    • Monitored by Advisor
    • Must complete a full year of yearbook class and participate in the completion of the annual yearbook.

  • Key Club - Sr Participation Award - MedallionAward
    • Monitored by Advisor
    • Participaton Award to seniors with 4 years of membership
    • Medallion Award goes to those Seniors who've proven outstanding participation.
  • USO Sophomore Honors Program
    • HHS can send 3 or 4 based on enrollment.
    • Criteria asks to identify "top sophomore"
    • Principal determines that sophomores should not be divided into "top", and utilizes following selection:
      • Any sophomore on track to graduate with highest honors is put into a lottery system.
      • Winners are drawn with all eligible students present.

  • Hugh O'Brian Youth Leadership Award
    • Any sophomore may choose to apply.
    • Applications  are reviewed by sponsoring committee based on academics and leadership.
    • HHS is notified of the winner.
  • Perfect Attendance
    • Based on data
    • Students in each grade level who have missed ZERO class periods
      • Activity absences are exempt from this classification.
      • Those students with zero absences but 2 or fewer tardies are eligible to receive this award if tardies are made up at 30 minutes

  • Four-Year Perfect Attendance 
    • Monitored by principal
    • Based on data
    • Special honor for seniors who have received the perfect attendance award all four years of high school.

  • Huron Tiger Network Ch 6
    • Monitored by Advisor
    • Must complete a full year as member of TV studio crew.
       
  • Special Olympics

    • Recognized for participation in Special Olympics

  • Elks' Student of the Month
    • Monitored by counselors
    • Criteria and selection by Elks Club

  • American Legion High School Award
    • Criteria from American Legion
      • Character 1 citizenship and scholarship
    • HS counselors and HS administration select 5-7 boys at the request of American Legion.
    • Legion holds an interview panel with the group nominated and determines the award winner.
       
  • American Legion High School Award
    • Criteria from American Legion Auxiliary
      • Character 1 citizenship and scholarship
    • HS counselors and HS administration select 5-7 girls at the request of Auxiliary.
    • Auxiliary holds an interview panel with the group nominated and determines the award winner.
